Talking to Hospitality Biz, Dilip Ray, Chairman, Mayfair Hotels & Resorts Pvt Ltd disclosed, “Our main focus areas are the East and North East, as there is a lot of untapped potential in these states. We also foresee traffic pouring into the states once the Silk route has been opened up. Taking into consideration these factors, we plan to strengthen our presence with additional properties across the region; simultaneously, we aim to tap into circuits.” Mayfair will also look to set up properties in Siliguri, Kalimpong and Chilka. Currently, the group is working on the region's second convention centre with a capacity of 1,200 people. It should be operational by January 2009.
In addition, the Group is looking at cities beyond the East and North East. “We are considering circuits in Rajasthan, such as Udaipur - Jaipur - Jaisalmer, while cities like Hyderabad and Goa could be on the charts, as well,” says Ray.
The group plans to launch a casino in its Gangtok property; licenses will be applied for by March 2009. Talks are currently on with various companies from America , Kathmandu , Russia and Genting Highlands in Malaysia , to operate the casino. “Our idea is to provide Indians with an alternative to Kathmandu 's casinos,” said Ray. The group also has plans to tap into niche tourism areas — such as wedding and spa tourism — through its properties.
